What I Do Best

CHECK OUT MY SAMPLE LESSONS

My lessons start with a warm up activity to get the student ready to learn. Then we introduce the topic and what you should be able to do after the class. We do various activities and games to practice the topic/grammar point and then review at the end.

My lessons are easy to follow, easy to understand, fun and simple. Below is a short example of 1 class about making questions in the past simple.

The topic of today’s class is practice using different past tenses to speak about your past holidays and trips. First, we will practice using a list of verbs in the past tense and practice how to pronounce them properly.

Using the past tense can be very simple when using regular verbs. All we have to do is add ‘ed’ to the end of the verb. For example; play – played, jump-jumped.

However, how to say these words is difficult and has 3 basic rules to follow.

1. Voiceless letters at the end of the verb make the sound at the end a ‘t’ sound.

Voiceless letters = p, k, c, th, f, s, sh, ch.

Example:             Kick ------ kicked          pick ------ picked          talk ----- talked      brush ---- brushed

2.  Words ending in voiced sounds end in a ‘d’ sound.

Voiced endings = b, g, v, z, m, n, r, l, th  etc….

Example:             beg ----- begged               breathe ------- breathed                raise ----- raised

3.  Words ending in t or d will cause the end sound in the past tense to be either ‘ud’ or ‘id’

Example:             Visit ------- visited             edit ----- edited                 end ------ ended

Now let’s see if you can tell me how to say these in the past tense and make a sentence too.

Walk

Camp

Flood

Stay

Help

Order

How to make past simple questions;

(QW) = Question word (who, what, when…)
(SUB) = subject (he, she, you…)

V1 = verb 1 (base verb)

PD = possessive determiner (my, your, his, her…)

1. To learn some information you can follow this structure; (sometimes it will change slightly)

With verb;

(QW) + did + (SUB) + V1 ………..?

E.g.      Where did you go in Japan?

            How long did he stay for?

            When did she come back?

            Where did you sit in the restaurant?

With noun;

(QW) + was/were + (PT) + noun…?

E.g.      What was his name?

            What was the name of the movie?

Where was your table in the restaurant?

2. To ask yes/no;

Did + (SUB) + V1….?

Did he come to class?       /       Did you play football?
