When to use the verb 'to do' and when to use the verb 'to be' is a very confusing topic for many Thais.
Rules (in present simple):
1. Verb 'to do' is used when asking about verbs
2. verb to be is used when asking about other things like adjectives and nouns.
Look at this question. Correct or incorrect?
What are you like food?
INCORRECT
'like' is a verb so you should use the verb 'to do'. Also the word 'food' should be after the word 'what'.
The correct way to ask is; What food do you like?
Here are some more examples;
Is it hot in Thailand?
(hot = adjective so use 'be')
How often do you study English?
(study = verb so use 'do')
What is his favourite food?
(food = noun so use 'be')
Does he want some coffee?
(want = verb so use 'do')
Note:
He, she, It and singular nouns use 'does' not 'do'
I, you, we, they and plural nouns use 'do' not 'does'
